Stroke Programme

After Stroke Programme

Stroke is the biggest cause of severe disability in the UK with 10,000 people each year experiencing a first stroke and another 3,000 having a further stroke. While over 90 per cent of sufferers are over the age of 55 years the number of relatively young patients are significantly increasing.

Active rehabilitation to improve mobility following a stroke is a key factor in helping people to remain at home, in reducing the likelihood of falls and limiting the need for admission to long-term care.

We provide an intensive rehabilitation programme for those that have exhausted their options for other rehabilitation programmes. Conductive Education is an educational approach that can help individuals with Cerebral Palsy, after stroke conditions, Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis to develop the skills and motivation they need to overcome problems of movement and bodily control they encounter in everyday living.

 The programme focuses on:

  • tasks to improve body awareness
  • tasks to enhance coordination and prevent dependency on the unaffected side
  • tasks to enhance balance and control
  • learning how to compensate for sensory loss
  • breathing techniques to enhance speech, circulation and general well-being
  • developing use of rhythm to help fully utilise movements
  • activities to increase expressive and receptive language skills
  •

The personal set of goals will be worked towards within a balanced programme designed to meet the individual's needs.
